Welcome!

  • Welcome to The Curatorial. You will always find in the Abstract a summary of what each section is about, followed by specific details about the essay, transcript, review, video, or portfolio you are about to read, look at, or listen to.

Welcome to The Curatorial.

The journal is an open-access online publication, which you can read further about on the About page. Founded by the School of Visual Arts’s master’s degree program in curatorial practice, I have aligned the journal with the Curatorial Studies Workshop of the Expanded Artistic Research Network (EARN). The Workshop includes a global group of practitioners and academics devoted to thinking about curating and curatorial studies. Workshop members also contribute to the Lexicon section of the journal, offering a constellation of ideas around crucial terms associated with curatorial practices and theories.

The Curatorial’s essays and reviews are added as they come in, avoiding monthly drops of thematic issues. In this way, we hope to capture a sense of topical immediacy delivered by interesting thinkers delving into the range of subjects in our purview. To those ends, the journal’s different sections are meant to be capacious enough to accommodate this range of curatorial and cultural concerns—and we’ll add and revise sections and their titles whenever it feels appropriate. We’re open to pitches for new pieces and always welcome new, generative thinking that enlarges the field. Join us.—Steven Henry Madoff, Founder and Editor-in-Chief
